REAL ID deadline extended
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Department of Homeland Security has extended the REAL ID enforcement deadline to October 1, 2021. This extends the deadline by which Americans will be required to have REAL ID credentials to board domestic flights. The REAL ID Act established minimum security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards, and prohibits Federal agencies from accepting for official purposes licenses and identification cards from states that do not meet these standards. Beginning October 1, 2021, every state and territory resident will need to present a REAL ID compliant license/ID, or another acceptable form of ID for boarding commercial aircraft, accessing Federal facilities and entering nuclear plants. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) considers a current passport of military ID acceptable identification for boarding an aircraft. For more information on Ohio’s REAL ID compliant license, visit bmv.ohio.gov.
To get a compliant driver license, your local BMV must verify the following documents:
- Birth Certificate or U.S. Passport/Passport Card
- Social Security Card or most recent W-2 or 1099 with the full social security number
- Two proofs of Ohio street address: utility bills, credit card/bank statements
- Proof of legal name changes: marriage license(s)/divorce decree(s).
